Rabbi Emeritus
Rabbi Aaron Landes came to Beth Sholom in 1964. He was ordained with honors in 1955 at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he also received the Master of Hebrew Literature degree, and in 1980, the Doctor of Divinity degree. Rabbi Landes holds the rank of Rear Admiral(Retired) in the United States Naval Reserve, having served in the Chaplain Corps for more than 34 years. He retired from the Navy in 1989 as Director of Navak Reserve Chaplains throughout the world. He retired as Rabbi of Beth Sholom in June, 2000.
Rabbi Landes has been recognized for his outstanding work in Jewish education and has earned a reputation as a true leader in the conservative Jewish community. Over the years he has been a driving force behind the spiritually creative and stimulating religious, educational, and social programs at Beth Sholom. Today, Rabbi Landes continues his involvement as an active member of the congregation in the role of Rabbi Emeritus. He has also founded and chairs the Limmud Foundation, whose goal is to support all aspects of Jewish education. He is married to Sora Landes, retired Principal of the Forman Center of Raymond and Ruth Perelman Jewish Day School. They have four children and eleven grandchildren.
